MASTERPIECE

Participants individually enter the space for a duration of 24 hours each. During this time they may take as many photographs in and of the space, excluding themselves, as they wish.

At the end of each participant's allotted time they must leave the gallery, download/develop their images and select a single image each, for display at the forthcoming opening reception.

I entered the space with the intention of meditating, doing yoga and simply relaxing. At the end of my time in the space I picked up the camera and snapped the shutter one time with the intention of accepting and developing whatever image was registered on the matrix.

I chose the particular composition in order to draw parallels between the image and my experience in the gallery.

Surrounded by so much, we rarely see clearly what we inhabit. For 24 hours we inhabited an empty gallery to see if we could clearly see at least the aesthetic value of an empty room. We photographed as much or as little as desired, ultimately choosing one image which we felt was the summation of our stay to print and exhibit.

The experience at times made us crave the photographic experience as a release from boredom. At other times the photographic experience was the culminating moment of hours of meditation. The selection of possible images to exhibit was far more intricate and numinous than the space at first appeared.

Being within four walls 24 hours closed in the space became extremely claustrophobic and hallucinatory experience for me, the constant attempt to run away, escape. It was extremely difficult to stay in the gallery and the purpose of looking for pictures became a salvation.
